Playing with traditional catholic symbolism and virtue. Fiddling with the perception of sin verse what true good and evil is/can be. Use some seemingly innocuous images that have had the projection of sin/judgement on them. Much of which contains to real power, hate, or sinfulness. The subjective idea of virtue and vice.
Additionally, pop images near serious ones. These images/ideas/stories live in the same world but are so mentally incompatible with one another. Example being: the world knows John the Baptist and Bart Simpson. They are both figures of history which is bizarre. All of which adds to this feeling of struggle between tradition and the new. Desire verse guilt, home-life verse peer-life verse work-life, Saturday night verses Sunday church verse Monday morning. All these lives we live are all one thing but are very separated. Guilt/tradition makes us want to live in “piety” and to be a good person but these are not the same thing.
